3- Homework! I am going to reopen homework and quizzes from 5.1-6.2 for a few days to give you the chance to look back at the problems you missed or had trouble with in order to study for the test. It will also be a chance to squeeze in a few extra points. :) They will be open until Friday at midnight. HOWEVER- please don't get behind in the new stuff.

4- Other test helps-
          REMEMBER to go through the practice tests!! They will be very helpful! Also, I'm going to get a formula/rules/don't forget sheet made up and give it to you in lab on Wednesday.

5- Lab attendance-
          Please try to make it to labs! I know that you are all busy and have other important things to do. However, lab is a time for you to do homework and ask me questions. We have also been doing LOTS of review. And... you never know when you might get a special treat ;)

Let me know if you need help! There are a few of you who I haven't seen for awhile and I hope you know that I'm still here and willing to help!

Main point of today's lesson is: there's a reason why we are told to avoid debt. Interest is an example of exponential growth. This section is about compound interest. If you learned anything today from class I hope it is to think smart about your purchases and determine whether or not the things you put on a credit card are worth carrying the debt for so long.

Overview of class 5.6

Spiritual thought: Take care of your physical bodies. Get lots of sleep, exercise, and eat lots of fruits and vegetables. Here's a recipe that I use to give myself and my children lots of fruits and vegies.



Purple Blast:
2 cups grape juice
1 cup water
1 banana
1 big bunch of red chard (approx. 7 giant leaves)
1 T alfalfa powder
1 cup spinach
2 cups frozen blueberries
1 cup frozen strawberries


Today we covered solving log equations.


We started class with the error analysis problems. See if you can locate the errors.

Next class we'll be going over logarithm functions. Please read through the material. And also if you have an extra minute go to geogebra.org and graph a few exponential functions like

f(x)= (1/2)^x

g(x) = 2^ x
h(x) = (-2)^x

What do you notice about the graphs? Are they all exponential functions?  Which graph represents an exponential decay?

I will be holding a special test review just for our class! It will be Tuesday (September 27) from 4-7 in room 173 of the TMCB.

Here is a tentative schedule, so you can know when you want/need to come:

Hey all you wonderful people! Because I love you all so much and I want you to do well on this next test I've decided to hold a test review. I don't have a room reserved yet, but I will get one as soon as possible! BUT- Tuesday from 4-7 I will be somewhere to help YOU! As soon as I have a room I will post again with even more details, but I thought I would give you the heads up. I know that several of you have work or classes in this time frame, which is part of the reason I will be available for 3 hours. If, however, there is no possible way for you to make it to this review let me know and I will try to find a time to meet with you one on one (no guarantees though). OR- I know that the math department will be hold reviews for this test as well. Please take advantage of these opportunities you have. We want you to succeed in this class. ON thursday, I'm going to bring in 2 Baby Ruth candy bars to 2 people who can answer a question I will bring. So be ready!!

I'm really enjoying teaching this section. I wish I knew all of you individually. I hope you are all doing okay and that you know that your success is very much on my mind.  I hope you know that I understand the struggles you are experiencing. Start thinking about test 2

Test 2 is around the corner so be sure you are going over the practice tests.  If you scored high on test 1, don't get complacent. Test 2 is notoriously more difficult than test 1. It covers more material.  I've attached a copy of the key for Fall 2010 exam. This will give you step to step guide to how to work the problem.

Hopefully you've taken test 1. If you haven't please speak with your TA's or email me at quinnme@uvu.edu.

Your Ta's will post your test scores into mylabsplus so you have your current grade standing.  Please double check your grades periodically to make sure everything looks good.
Also, if you scored below an 70% on test 1, please discuss some help options with your TA.  There is a lot of help available to you.  Please plan on making it to the friday help sessions. 
Your TA's can go over your test with you to find out what concepts you need assistance with. 

Don't lose hope. The first test is worth a small amount of your final grade. You'll need to plan on spending some extra time studying.

Hello math students,

I am Taylor Kroff, the head T.A. for the lower division math classes.  I
work in the math lab.  If you donÂ’t know what the Math Lab is, it is
located in the north-west corner of the Talmage building on the first
floor, in room 159 (itÂ’s a very large room with many tables).  During all
open hours, there are tutors that roam and assist students that need help
with their homework (youÂ’ll know them by their blue vests).  ItÂ’s a great
place to come and do your math homework, or just study for tests. The math
lab is open almost all day throughout the week, and on Saturday mornings.

Throughout the semester, I will assign different tutors from the math lab
to hold reviews, to help you get ready for your midterms and final exams.
There will be one or two reviews before each test you take, and the
reviews will cover the same material that will be on the test.  You will

etc.), several days before they take place.  And I will be putting up
fliars in the math lab as well, to let you know where and when they are.

If you feel you need one-on-one assistance in your math courses, you can

Win Candy-you know you want some

For those of you that attended Friday's Help session. I have your guesses for the M&M's in the jar. We will be spending 2 days on Rational Functions. In class on Thurs, I will review Polynomial Functions and then go over 4.3 in class (Day 1 of 2 of Rational Functions). Please read through the textbook, watch videos, and go through the lecture notes -powerpoint is attached at the bottom.

Key terms: asymptotes, unbounded, improper, rational function

Objectives: find asymptotes in order to prepare for graphing, review polynomial long division


Answer the following True False questions.


1.  T/F: The quotient of two polynomial expressions is a polynomial function.

2.  T/F: To graph y = -x^2 you would reflect the graph of y = x^2 over the x axis.

3.  T/F: The domain of every rational function is the set of all real numbers.

4.  T/F: If an asymptote is neither horizontal nor vertical, it is called oblique.

5. T/F: If the degree of the numerator of a rational function equals the degree of the denominator, then the ratio of the leading coefficients gives rise to the horizontal asymptote.

6.  T/F: If the graph of a rational function R has the vertical asymptote x = 4, then x-4 must be in the denominator.

7.  T/F: No graph of a rational function can have both a horizontal and an oblique asymptotes.

8.  T/F: It is possible to have a graph of a rational function with both vertical and horizontal asymptotes.

Warmup to 4.2--Everyone try these

Warmup to 4.2

Question 1:  Go to www.wolframalpha.com and graph the following function:
f(x) = x^2 (x-2)
Part a: How many x-intercepts are there? What are they?

Part b: Which statement is true about the graph.
a.        The graph increases on the interval (2,∞)
b.      The graph is decreasing on the interval (-∞, 0)
c.       The graph crosses through the point (0,0)
d.      The graph touches at the zero (2,0)

Question 2: Look at the following graph and answer the questions below about the attributes of the graph.
 Part a: How many x-intercepts are there? What are they? (hint look under the graph and see if you can  tell)
Part b: Is the graph smooth and continuous? (look in your book to read about what this means)
Part c: How many turning points are there in the graph?  (look in your book to read about what this means.)

Question 3: Go to www.geogebra.org  and try to draw a graph that matches with the following description. Write down the function you found that fits this description.
This graph’s end behavior is negative from both the left and right side. This graph has 3 turning points.  This graph has two x intercepts.

Homework:  Stay ahead of the schedule. Don't wait a week to finish your homework. The week due date was only established to help those who have extenuating circumstances. You should plan on completing your homework before we discuss the next section. So before next tues you should have 3.5 and 4.1 completed.


Exams: We also expect you to take the exams within the first 3 days as well. So you should plan on taking the exam next week.

Quizzes: We also expect you to attend your labs. You will be given a password during lab so that you can access the quizzes. Currently the passwords have been lifted but this will not be the case starting next week. It is considered cheating to give passwords to other students. if you have something come up and can't attend any of your TAs lab sessions, please email your TA and let them know. They will make the call on whether or not they will give you the password. 

This class is challenging when you get behind, so stay focused and on top of your studies.

Recap of class today

Hope class went okay for everyone today. I failed to mention so many things so that's what this handy blog is for so make sure you read all the posts.

Most of the questions students had after class seemed to be regarding the syllabus, homework, tests, etc. These questions will probably be cleared up after labs today. Take time to read through the syllabus. If you lose it and want an extra copy ask your TA or stop by my office 174 TMCB.

Homework & Quizzes--You can't start the homework until you buy your access code (see previous post about book). Once you receive your code then go to byu.mylabsplus.com to log in. In order to log in you use your net id as your username and your byu ID (the numbers) for your password. You can change this afterwards if you'd like.  If you can't access the homework then you need to email Jim Logan.

Practice Tests
Today I distributed a practice test for Test 1. There are 4 practice tests available at the www.math.byu.edu website. Be sure to go to Math 110. It's a good idea to think about your exam since it's next week.

Calculators
You don't need a fancy calculator for this course. You can't use a calculator on any of the exams. You can just use the websites I told you about or the calculator on your desktop.

Warmups for 4.1
Remember to check out the warmups and go through it. This will help us have a more meaningful discussion during class on thursday.

Warmup to 4.1

Quadratic Functions Exploration
On Thurs we will look in more detail about quadratic functions and the properties of the functions.  Read ahead, maybe watch a video, and go through the exploration given below to help you learn the material with understanding.
Follow the directions for the task given with the link and answer the following questions in the space provided.

1)      Click on the following links and explore the graphs of quadratic functions in VERTEX FORM. 

a)      Describe what happens to the graph when you change the variable a.
(type here)
b)      Describe what happens to the graph when you change the variable h.

c)      Describe what happens to the graph when you change the variable k.

2)      Why do you think that vertex form was introduced in algebra?  Why didn’t we just stick to standard form?

3)      Would you prefer graphing a quadratic function in vertex form or in standard quadratic form?  Explain your answer.

4)      Let’s say a student in our class wants to know how to put a function given in standard quadratic form into VERTEX quadratic form, explain to this student how he/she could do this?  Explain the process ( you will be graded on thoughtful responses).

There are 2 ways of graphing quadratic functions: by transformations and by properties.
We’ve looked at graphing functions by transformations (in problems 1-4).  Now let’s look at graphing by properties.  You want to use graphing by properties when the function is in standard form.
5)      Here are the properties you need to know to in order to graph by properties.  Please go to the following link and put in the following function to find the properties.
Determine the vertex:


Determine the x-intercepts:


y-intercept:

6)      Continue to use http://www.wolframalpha.com/
a)      Does the graph of this quadratic function open upwards or downwards?
b)      What is the vertex of the parabola?
c)      Does this function have a max or min value?
d)     Would this parabola have x-intercepts YES or NO? Explain why or why not?


Algebra is the study of patterns, making generalizations, and reasoning. What patterns do you see with graphing quadratics?
